Viet Duc High School, situated in the heart of the capital at 47 Ly Thuong Kiet, Cua Nam Ward, Hanoi City, stands as one of Vietnam's most historically significant and prestigious educational institutions. Officially founded on April 3, 1955, with Mr. Pham Quang Hieu as its first principal, the school’s history reflects the nation’s journey through various names, including Hanoi High School No. 2-3, Hanoi A-B, and Ly Thuong Kiet High School. It officially became Viet Duc High School in 1997.
The school’s early days (1955–1960) saw it serving nearly 900 students and receiving recognition from Uncle Ho himself in 1956. During the intense war years (1965–1975), operating as Hanoi A-B, the school dispersed to rural areas, diligently continuing its educational mission while contributing significantly to national defense, an effort praised by Prime Minister Phạm Văn Đồng. After reunification, the school excelled academically, focusing on the "Good Teaching – Good Learning" movement and training multiple generations of students who achieved success in national and international academic competitions.
As one of the largest high schools in Hanoi today, Viet Duc High School maintains an impressive track record, boasting a near 99.9% high school graduation rate and consistently high university admission rates.
The school is particularly distinguished by its extensive cooperative relationship with Germany. This unique partnership enables qualified students to access scholarship programs from the German Federal Government (FDT levels A and B) to pursue studies abroad, actively contributing to the training of high-quality human resources for Vietnam.
For its continuous dedication and pivotal role in education, Viet Duc High School was proudly honored with the Third-class Labor Order from the State in 1998, affirming its leading position in the Vietnamese education system.
